CMU Australia anticipates robust demand for its data analytics training programs from the Philippines government and industry.

This follows the successful completion last month by 15 Filipino senior government officials in the inaugural Carnegie Mellon University Australia Short Course in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (BIDA).

The Short Course in BIDA, funded as part of the Australia Awards program, was developed to meet the commitment of the Philippines’ National Development Plan to provide opportunities for public sector managers to build data analytics and business intelligence skills and capability.

Conducted over two semesters, the 15 participants spent their first semester at Carnegie Mellon University in Australia attending classes with renowned information technology faculty and conceptualized their Capstone Projects to enhance the analytics capacities of their home agencies.

At the presentation of the Capstone Projects to government and industry notables at a Data Analytics Forum and Showcase in Manila, CMU Australia’s Professor Murli Viswanathan said “these senior officials commenced their training in Australia undertaking classes in data management, advanced visualization techniques, analytics and machine learning, business intelligence and project management with the primary aim of competency building and the application of the newly acquired skills to real-world projects within their Agencies”.

In March they returned to their respective Government Agencies to work on their Capstone Projects which focused on actual technology issues and analytics-led digital transformations within their Agencies.

Over 10 weeks, they worked in Agency-specific teams studying analytics gaps, acquitting, wrangling and analyzing data to develop a plan of recommendations and future development ideas to be presented to senior management.

“Our objective was to upskill the participants to enhance their analytics and data mining skills while reinforcing the importance of data driven digital transformation strategies - Prof. Murli Viswanathan

“Every participant excelled, and I was amazed at what we were able to achieve with the Capstone Projects in such a short duration.

“I’m really excited about the future adoption and application of best practice cutting-edge analytics within the Philippines public sector, said Murli.

Government and industry guests at the recent Data Analytics Forum and Showcase were also impressed by the participants’ Capstone project work with many asking for more analytics courses to be delivered for Philippines public sector employees.

In addition, Professor Viswanathan presented special lecture on “Transforming Government and Business through Artificial Intelligence and Analytics”. This was highly appreciated by the audience including Dr Ernesto M.Pernia, the Secretary of Socioeconomic Planning, National Economic and Development Authority and other dignatories.

The agencies who participated in the inaugural Short Course in BIDA included are the Department of Budget and Management; Civil Service Commission; Department of Interior and Local Government; National Economic and Development Authority and Department of Trade and Industry.
