Over two hundred teams from universities around the world participated in the recent Hilti Mobile App Competition, at which three teams from Professor Murli Viswanathan’s Mobile Development course reached the semi-finals. Of the three, Team 26 - Karthik Balasubramanian, Himanshu Agrawal, Nikhil Agrawal and Poorna Theksvi - succeeded in reaching the finals. They were among the top 10 teams invited to participate in the last round of competition at Hilti’s Asia-Pacific Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 23-24 February 2016. Following a series of challenges and presentations facing an international group of judges, Team 26 won 2nd prize in the competition. The team’s victory continues CMU’s successful participation in the Hilti competition, where last year a CMU-A team won the grand prize.

The Hilti Mobile App Competition is an annual management initiative aimed at generating new and innovative technology ideas from students and graduates. The 2016 Hilti Mobile App Competition focused on mobile app design ideas that would enhance the digital experience of Hilti's customers and employees.  Team 26 took on the challenge of designing a mobile app prototype to enhance the productivity of Hilti’s sales force.  Using the Android Framework, Android Volley, Spring Data (API) and MySQL, they created HiltiQuizAPI, a fun and interactive learning app to improve the product knowledge of the sales force.

"We devised a digital strategy in just 20 minutes and presented it in 5. Without this exposure from Carnegie Mellon, I think this would not have been possible at all," said Karthik Balasubramanian.

Team 26's Karthik Balasubramanian, Himanshu Agrawal, Nikhil Agrawal and Poorna Theksvi will be back in Malaysia later this year to take on their internship positions at Hilti, and have high prospects of turning them into full time positions.
