Software Engineering Institute

The Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI) based in the United States works closely with defence and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. The SEI established its Asia-Pacific base at Carnegie Mellon University in Australia in August 2011 to offer courses to professionals in Asia and the Pacific and to collaborate with local companies and organisations.

The SEI's core purpose is to help organisations such as yours to improve software engineering capabilities and to develop or acquire the right software, defect free, within budget and on time, every time. To accomplish this, the SEI:

  • performs research to explore promising solutions to software engineering problems

  • identifies and codifies technological and methodological solutions

  • tests and refines the solutions through pilot programs that help industry and government solve their problems

  • widely disseminates proven solutions through training, licensing, and publication of best practices

AAS (Philippines) Short Course in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics

The program is ideal for mid-career professionals and is designed to help meet the expanding needs for data scientists who are skilled in the utilisation of a unique blend of science, art and business. It combines a comprehensive business intelligence, data analytics and management curriculum with an industry-based Data Analytics Capstone Project, delivering valuable career experience, theory and knowledge all in one. With our hybrid delivery model, participants will take the first half of the program in the CMU Adelaide campus and the second half of the program in the Philippines through a combination of online and faculty-supported delivery of courses.

A key feature of this program is the Data Analytics Capstone Project. It provides the participants with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills as they work in teams – one from APC and another from the partner government agency, to develop and recommend solutions for their respective organizations. It is intended that the project will focus on supporting a priority area for the Philippine government or other clients. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from Heinz College of Carnegie Mellon University. Participants are expected to combine their newly acquired knowledge and skills in BIDA to develop and implement a Re-entry Action Plan upon conclusion of the project.

This plan will be developed in participation with their agency which will provide a mentor to them. The Plan could be the implementation of the Capstone Project. Upon completion of the program, senior officials from various government agencies, industries and academia will be invited to attend an executive briefing session. The briefing session will comprise of an overview and discussion on the Initiatives and Impact of BIDA in the Philippines, presentation of Data Analytics Capstone projects and will conclude with the Certificate Presentation ceremony.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply techniques for data management, including data wrangling, machine learning, sampling, exploratory analysis, regression and classification, prediction, and data communication.
  • Design, document and develop robust, extensible and highly maintainable data-intensive applications using cutting edge technologies tailored to the specific needs of any business or organizational scenario.
  • Explain and apply the core aspects of information technology project management principles and tools, and understand the factors for effective implementation in a business analytics context.
  • Develop systems to automate data collection and data mining which help to generate previously hidden insights that can profoundly impact the performance or success of any business or organization.

Program Structure

Participants in the Australia Awards (Philippines) Short Course Program in BIDA are expected to be enrolled on a full-time basis throughout the duration of the program. Participants are required to complete nine courses and one Data Analytics Capstone project for the program. In the first (March) semester, participants attend courses on campus in Australia. Enrolment of five courses (listed below) is equivalent to a full-time course load.

First semester in Australia

In the second (May) semester, participants are not required to congregate for classes but follow lectures remotely (via video) from the Philippines. Enrolment in four courses (listed below) and a Data Analytics Capstone project is equivalent to a full-time course load. Participants are required to have access to a PC/laptop and reliable internet access. It is expected that participants work in the Data Analytics projects within their own group, following the projected milestones, and under supervision by Professor Murli Viswanathan.

On average, participants attend at least three hours of lectures per week for each course, additional hours required if the course is technical and includes lab or review sessions. In addition, participants are expected to spend at least 5 hours per week for each course for self-study and to work on various types of assessments required for the course – quiz, assignment, research, report writing, presentation, etc. The recommended learning plan for the Data Analytics project is no less than 12 hours per week.
