Public Policy and Management

Overview

If you aspire to be a future leader and manager of a public, private or non-profit organization, the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (MSPPM) degree will help you achieve this goal. If you have a passion for academic, political, and social issues, are well rounded, and have an inherent propensity for questioning the status quo, you're an excellent candidate for the MSPPM program.

While most public policy graduate programs focus on theory, we offer a skills-based curriculum. Due to an evolving workforce, we want you to graduate from our program with a skill set that will allow you to shape a flexible career now and 20 years from now.

No other place brings together information technology, leadership development, quantitative policy analysis, and communication skills like Carnegie Mellon. Our innovative curriculum equips students with a data-driven approach to solving problems and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Additionally, because the future of any organization is affected by technology, you'll graduate with a better understanding of current trends in information technology that can help you tackle complex policy issues, giving you a competitive advantage in the job market.

Students gain the technical and analytical skills necessary for change, the communication skills to create clear and persuasive content and presentations, and the leadership skills to inspire their colleagues and to bring out the best in their co-workers.

Learning Outcomes

At completion of the MSPPM program, you will be able to competently:

  • Assume positions in policy development, implementation and evaluation, and manage these functions in government, non-profit organisations, international organisations and the private sector
  • Implement skills in all aspects of management, including general management, leadership, organisation management, strategic planning, financial management, human resource management, and IT management
  • Utilise training grounded in theory and practical application of theory to work in organisations in developed countries and countries with emerging economies
  • Understand how to analyse data and make effective management decisions
  • Look beyond traditional paradigms, looking instead to non-traditional path-breaking solutions
  • Advance the public interest by utilising exceptional analytical, quantitative and technical skills

Careers

Our MSPPM graduates are employed in every sector of the market and in virtually every industry. They work for large, established organizations and for emerging companies. They're employed in positions such as policy analysts, budget analysts, managers and consultants. Their work covers every functional area found in non-profit organizations, federal, state and local governments and private firms.

Course Exemption

If you have a strong background in any of the core courses, you can receive an exemption either by passing an exemption exam administered during your orientation program or through successful completion of comparable coursework during your undergraduate studies. Exempting a course does not reduce the required number of courses you must complete but instead allows you to choose additional elective courses to expand your knowledge base and further tailor your program.
