Mr. Carl Demetria is a Medical Specialist with the West Visayas State University Medical Centre in Iloilo City. He earned his medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, and his Master of Science in Information Systems from the University of the Philippines Open University. He undertook his residency training in Emergency Medicine at the Philippine General Hospital.
In his current role, he is involved in the policy implementation and evaluation as part of Health Operations. He is also the Chief Medical Informatics Officer, responsible for advising top management on Information Technology strategy.
Carnegie Mellon University’s reputation as a leader in public policy and information technology management is what attracted Carl to apply for the CHED scholarship.
He feels that as the future of healthcare policy increasingly involves technology to maximize efficiencies, the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management will equip him to contribute towards further development of the WVSU Medical Center when he returns to the Philippines.
“The WVSU Medical Center is uniquely placed as one of only two University-based government tertiary training hospitals in the Philippines”, said Carl.
This unique position carries with it a lot of challenges in operations. Using the tools and skills that CMU will teach me, I hope to be able to confront those challenges so that the hospital can fulfill its mandate of providing service, training and research to its various stakeholders.
